With more and more home owner clients I have serviced, I felt it is essential to provide a guide on how to select the most suitable window for their home. I decided to write a series of information to share with people who is in need of windows in the future.

For the start, let us discuss about what is the design you look for. Here are the common designs:

Sliding window

Sliding window is designed to have one or two window sashes sliding horizontally within its frame. Sliding windows can open without using any exterior or interior space, so it is good option for areas with limited space.

Awning window

Awning window is with hinges mounted at the top, they create an awning effect and provide protection from the weather while still allowing for ventilation. They will allow little to no leakage from rain when open, so you can enjoy fresh air in your home or office, even when the weather is bad.

Casement window

Casement window is hinged at the side and swing outside or inside, they can fully open to 90 degree allowing max ventilation and daylighting.
They have great airtightness performance when completely closed.

Crank window

Crank window is hinged at the side and swing outside through crank hardware.Similar design as casement window but with different hardware.

Tilt and turn window

Tilt and turn window has two opening positions, they can be used as casement windows and hopper windows. Casement opening can allow maximum air circulation and easy cleaning, tilt opening can allow air come through in bad weather while to keep the rain out.

Bi-fold window

Bi-fold windows are configured to slide and stack folding in either one direction or in both directions creating a large clear opening .

Louver window

Louver window is a window blind or shutter with horizontal slats that are angled to allow light and air come through, but to keep out rain and direct sunshine. Louver windows can provide good ventilation and daylighting with adjustable glass slat.

Double hung window

Double hung window is designed to have one or two window sashes sliding vertically within its frame. Double hung window can open without using any exterior or interior space, so it is good option for areas with limited space.

Fixed window

Fixed window is also called a picture window which can not open but can come in any shape and size, and they are the most energy-efficient type of window.

Frameless folding window means a folding window without side frame, only with top and bottom track. Such design can create a fully clear large view for the house.

Design choice is the first step, the key is to make sure this design suit your architectural style and function needs. After you get familiar with different opening designs, you may have your preferred designs for different rooms in your mind. Make sure the designs you choose for the wall opening will not have following situations:

  1. Hit some objects around the window
  2. Difficult to reach the handle
  3. Allow too little fresh air for the area where need much fresh air

After you make all this hidden problems solved, I am sure you can choose the best design.
